Assignment Group Weighting

If you weight assignments, you must set weighting up in Canvas. Canvas will then automatically display the assignment group weights on the syllabus page. Do not manually add weighting information to the syllabus yourself. By allowing Canvas to add this for you, it avoid discrepancies in Canvas' actual assignment weighting and what is in your syllabus.

We recommend using assignment group weighting. However, unless your department mandates it, you are not required to use assignment group weighting. Your academic department can provide guidance on how much weight should be applied to each assignment group.

Assignments within the same weighted group cannot be weighted differently against one another. So, for example if you weight your quizzes as 20% of the final grade, but you wish for one quiz to be worth more than the other quizzes, you must simply assign it a higher point value. (One quiz could be worth 100 points and another 150 points.)

Editing Assignment Group Weighting

Assignment Point Values

Assignment point values should be straightforward to students. For example, It is often best practice to simply make all similar assignments in a weighted assignment group worth the same number of points.

Pay attention to assignment point values. Larger assignments should be worth more points than smaller assignments when they are both in the same weighted assignment group. For example, a discussion forum should not be worth 100 points if it is in the same weighted group as a long-term group project that is also worth 100 points.
