Templates

We have created course templates for instructors to use when editing their courses in Canvas. Each templates contains:

  • Course home page

  • Getting started page that includes information about netiquette and academic honesty

  • Student support page, including information about accessibility, counseling services, and library research

  • Syllabus template

  • Assignment template

  • Discussion forum template

  • Weekly pacing guide template

Choosing a Template

The NCSSM Course templates provide flexibility by allowing instructors to create their own module structure. Brief guides to best practices are provided.

Importing the Module into Your Course

We recommend importing the module into your course shell before you start to work on the course, as a template import can overwrite work you have completed in the course. (The blank syllabus template will overwrite anything you added to the syllabus page yourself, for example).

Step 1

Go to Canvas Commons. It can be found by clicking the Canvas Commons icon in the Canvas main menu.

Step 2

The templates are listed first, as they are "featured" content.

Step 3

After selecting a template, use the "Import/Download" button to import the template into your course shell.

Step 4

Select the correct course shell (you may need to search for it) and choose to "import into course." The course import usually completes in less than a second, but don't be alarmed if it takes longer.
