Steps to Planning a Course (Backward Design)

1. Create Course Objectives

2. Outline Units and Unit Learning Objectives (we recommend week-long units, with unit outcomes that align with course outcomes.)

3. Create major assessments to meet each unit's objectives

4. Create activities and formative assessments to prepare students for major assessments (scaffolding)

5. Create or curate content that adds context and prepares students for activities and formative assessments.

Steps to Developing a Course in Canvas

• Setup course grading scheme

• Simplify course navigation

• Create assignment groups and weight them appropriately

• Add syllabus to Canvas

• Create modules in Canvas for each unit

• Create unit guides with outcomes and optional pacing guides

• Add each assignment with due dates to modules; include rubrics

• Create Canvas pages to provide context

• Optional: Create a course home page
